In 2022, 2.56 million people benefitted from unemployment insurance in Italy. One third of the benefits were paid out to workers residing in the south, whereas almost 20 percent were supplied to workers in the north-east. Therefore, joblessness affected the southern regions mostly, as confirmed by the unemployment rates. In the north, five percent of residents did not have a job in 2022, while in the south this figure stood at 15 percent.
